Getting the Room Right: Avoid the Top 10 Decorating Mistakes – Part 1

If you have been struggling with decorating your home and just don’t seem to be getting the room right, chances are you’ve made one — or two, or seven — of the top ten decorating mistakes. Check out these great examples of rooms that have successfully dealt with these common design issues. The 3 Layers of Light Every Kitchen Needs, Part 3 – Accent Lights

If you read Part 1 on Ambient Lighting and Part 2 on Task Lighting you may be thinking that once your kitchen is nice and bright and you can see what you’re doing, why would you need any other lights? But your kitchen can be taken to a level of beauty you hadn’t realized possible when adding accent lighting. These are lights which highlight features or also lights which may simply be beautiful in their own right. Sometimes people separate those into two categories of decorative and accent lighting – but I think of them in the same group. Their job is to add or highlight beauty. Chandeliers and pendant lights fall into this category doing double duty – adding beauty while also providing ambient or task lighting. But there are a couple others that shouldn’t be overlooked.
In the kitchen below, contemporary pendant lights are nice accents above the island, providing task light also. Spot lights above the fireplace wall highlight the unique texture, adding interest to the room.
Cabinet top lights - If you have cabinets that have space between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling, putting some light up here can give a beautiful glow that makes the ceiling feel higher. And if you also have room up there for some nice sized accessories, lighting them will add to the effect. The very same lights used as under cabinet lights will work here. You can also use rope lights if all you need is a soft glow. There are rarely electrical outlets up above the cabinets, so this improvement generally calls for an electrician to be involved. But it’s really worth it. It is also possible to add lights below your base cabinets to illuminate softly around the toe-kick area. I confess that to me, this feels like overkill and a great way to remind me how long it’s been since I swept. But if you get up for a lot of late night snacks & don’t want to turn on the overhead lights – perhaps this type of lighting could keep you from stubbing a toe.
Wall Sconces – Since wall sconces are generally mounted about 5 to 6 feet from the floor, they are very visible and can be a nice decorative touch. Not only can they be beautiful themselves, but they can wash light over a wall highlighting an interesting texture such as stone tile. You can also highlight art with a wall mounted spot light above the piece.
Candle Light - Don’t forget that candles can add a warm glow to your kitchen. Sometimes, when I’m in the mood, I light a candle and pour myself a glass of wine to have while I’m cooking. Makes it more fun! This is an especially attractive type of light to include when entertaining as guests tend to gravitate to the kitchen. Just like all other accessories, choose candle holders that are sized in an appropriate scale for their place and in a style to complement the room.
The kitchen below has cabinet top lights to illuminate the high ceiling area and also lights in glass front cabinets.
Display Lighting - If you have open display shelves in the kitchen or glass front cabinets, it may be appropriate to add lighting here. Small hidden spot lights are generally called for in these types of places and hiding the electrical wires is essential so they don’t distract from the items being displayed.
Dimmer Switches – Whatever you do, don’t forget the dimmer switches! It’s great to have the lights on full blast when you are in full work mode. But if you are just relaxing with a cup of coffee it might be nicer to have softer light. And think about when you get up in the night for a drink or snack. Nicer to have soft lights then instead of being jarred awake with the full available wattage. Under cabinet lights take on the role of accent lighting when dimmed.

Portland Interior Designer Shares: Where to Shop in The Pearl District – Lux Lighting

If you are moving to the Portland, Oregon Pearl District from somewhere in California (who isn’t? — I did!) or any other sunny place, you are probably noticing that there just isn’t as much light here with the cloudy and rainy days we often have. In fact, for the whole first year I lived here, I would think it was around 5:00 or 6:00 in the evening when it was only 2:00pm!! So today I’m sharing a little of my expertise on designing lighting plans and where to buy the coolest contemporary lighting fixtures and lamps.
Many of my clients living in the Pearl District are in one of the wonderful Lofts, Condos or Townhomes in buildings like 937 Condominiums, Bridgeport Condos, Streetcar Lofts, The Elizabeth, Indigo @ Twelve West, The Encore, The Wyatt or The Henry – just to name a handful. If you are not lucky enough to have a corner unit, although you may have floor to ceiling windows, they are probably all on one side and you have big lighting issues further back in your home. To complicate matters, you may have concrete ceilings or walls and steel studs. Enough to stop the DIY design enthusiast in their tracks! Many of my clients call me for help in designing a lighting plan for their Pearl District loft or condo. If you want a truly unique and upscale look, I have many “To-The-Trade” resources. But lots of my clients hire me to help them come up with a lighting plan, and they want to do their own shopping at retail stores to keep their costs down. They then run their favorite options past me for advice before making their final decisions.This is a great way to avoid any expensive mistakes! With a lighting plan consultation you can be sure you have all your lighting needs addressed and that it all looks great together.
So, I’m sharing my favorite retail lighting specialty store in the Pearl District. It’s Lux Lighting on the corner of NW Glisan & NW 13th. Their showroom will just knock your socks off with the latest in modern, contemporary and transitional lighting. They carry a huge array of brands. Some of my personal favorites are Foscarini (I have their Big Bang Chandelier in my own entryway – fabulous!,) Flos, George Kovacs, Luceplan, Modernica, Robert Abbey, Pablo and many, many more! They have amazing and unique high-end light fixtures and lamps as well as amazingly affordable and beautiful designs. I have always found Lux Lighting’s sales staff to be knowledgeable and willing to help with tricky lighting design issues.
Here in Portland, and especially in the Pearl District’s high rise lofts and condos, coming up with a great lighting plan is important to feeling good in your home.
** The first layer of light, ambient lighting (or overall general lighting) can be addressed through ceiling fixtures. Monorail and track lighting are two solutions that give a great amount of flexibility to your lighting through the myriad choice of spot lights and pendants. This will be especially important in the deeper recesses of lofts, condos or townhomes that have windows on a single side. Balance the amount of light so you have as much light toward the back of the space as you do near the windows.
** Task lighting is the next layer. Reading lamps and above counter lights in the kitchen are two good examples of lights that make it easier for you to function in your home. Think about the tasks you perform – cooking, reading, working at a desk – and add extra light to shine directly on your work space.
** Accent lighting is what really brings your space to life and adds that designer look. This includes lighting for your art, “up lights” that wash light onto the ceiling, and decorative lamps that are beautiful in their own right. Since many of the newer construction buildings feature lofts or condos with high ceilings, this is the perfect opportunity to add drama with a spectacular chandelier.
